- Live Intro
- If you could be buried in a can of Pringles, what flavor can would you choose? (Brandy)
- Frederic Baur, in 1966, developed idea for stacking chips in a can. He was so proud of this accomplishment, when he died at the age of 89, he requested that he be buried in a Pringles can. His children stop at a Walgreens to buy his burial Pringles on the way to the funeral. The only argument they had was in regard to which flavor he would want. They went with Original. (Brandy)
- Father’s Day – So last weekend was Father’s Day, did you have a nice day? (Brandy)
- Episode Intro (Brandy)
- Speaking of Father’s…well and Mothers too. We should get into this week’s episode. This week we are discussing parenting. But before we dive in, today’s episode will be a bit different from our usual format. Having said that Nic and I are thrilled to welcome our first guest to the podcast. Nic why don’t you introduce our guest!
- Guest Intro (Nic)
- Brief Brooke Introduction
- Pleasantries (Brandy/Nic/Brooke)
- Questions- So, I’ve prepared a series of questions for the two of you, one or both of you can answer or comment, granted there will be pointed questions to you individually. Let’s get started.
- The two of you have been parents for a bit over a year now. Think back to your ideas of parenting before the baby was born. Have those expectations you had then changed? Are things different than you had envisioned? Are things easier or maybe harder than you expected?
- What has been the most rewarding part of parenting thus far? How about the most challenging?
- Brooke this one is for you. Breastfeeding is such a debated topic for moms. In the beginning you were breastfeeding but at a certain point you couldn’t. Did you at any time feel pressured? Bullied? Mom-shamed? I remember at 18 feeling inadequate and less of a mom because I chose not to breast-feed Nic. Many women shamed me for not giving my child that, quote/unquote best start in life. Mom-shaming is a real issue in society. Have you experienced this in any capacity? What would you say to a mom coming to you for advice on this topic?
- Who in your families has been the most influential on your parenting style? What was the best advice that person or persons gave you?
- What is your philosophy on discipline? Punishment? Spanking? (i.e. Positive Parenting vs. Authoritarian Discipline)
- What is your parenting philosophy on teaching about religion, race, political issues, and personal freedoms to name a few? Do you believe your beliefs are the right answer and teach them only those beliefs/moors/values? Do you encourage your kid(s) to seek out their own answers?
- Nic this one is for you. A recent study found that only a third of millennial men live in the household with their children. On the flip side, One in five millennial men are single dads (this cohort being non-married; with children living full time in the home). What are your thoughts/reaction to these statistics?
- There is a lot of hatred and bigotry in this world presently. Much of which is being perpetrated in our own backyard; specifically, regarding the policies against trans-youth and the anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment. What are your thoughts on raising a child or children that are LGBTQ+/gender neutral/non-binary especially in light of today’s culture? Do you think there are adequate resources out there today to help parents educate themselves so that they can care for, nurture, and unconditionally support their children no matter how they identify? How would you navigate this journey with your child?
- Id like you to agree or disagree with the following statements about millennial parents... Millennial parents both value and make time for togetherness even though they are busier than their grandparent were at the same age. Millennial parents schedule everything, even free time. Millennial parents make worse parents than Boomers. They are shit parents with terrible boundaries and lazy parenting.
- What are some lifehacks that have been a lifesaver?
- What are some parenting books, apps, or podcasts that you couldn’t have lived without?
- If you could go back in time a year ago and give yourself one piece of parenting advice/wisdom, what would it be? l
- Wrap-Up
- Parenting isn’t hard. Love and unconditional support are the keys. Also, remember to be kind to yourself, you may make mistakes, unintentionally, but you are doing the best that you can in that moment! (Brandy)
